Travelling with your kids is absolutely one of the most interesting experience you can have. But, it also means that you have to be responsible for your children’s safety through the trip. Some parents think little of it but automobile crashed in fact is the leading cause of unintentional injury for children. Therefore, always prepare the best protection for your kids before any trip. Here are something you have to notice when travelling with your kids by car.

Essential things must have in car:

1. CAR SAFETY SEAT

Car seats (or child safety seats) are seats specifically designed to protect children from injury during collisions. It is the most effective way you can do to protect your child when travelling by car as it may reduce the risk of a potentially fatal injury for children, especially babies and toddlers. Car seats is so essential that many countries, including United States, legally require parents to have them in cars when transport children up to the age of 2 or more.

The type of seat your child needs depends on several things, including your child's age, size and the type of vehicle you have. You may see the below chart to have a quick guide of safety seats. Then, you may search for more information from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) about choosing the most appropriate car seat for your child.

Children above 10 years of age can be old enough and large enough to fit in seat belt correctly. They should use seat belts for best protection. Remember to always lock both the lap and shoulder belts, right away when kids get into the car until arriving destination.

Notice: Never place safety seat or let your kid less than 13 years sit in front-seat. Because passenger-side air bag which are designed for adult can seriously injure a small child. You should let them ride in the back seat. In case you have no choice but to place it in front-seat, push the passenger seat as far back as it will go.

2. TRAVELERS' HEALTH KIT

It is must-have for every trip, especially if you go with kids. You can never be too careful preparing. You may consider packing below things in health-kit: First aid, antiseptic wound cleanser, bandages, thermometer, cold and flu medications, etc. In addition, parents should also bring a water- and insect-proof ground sheet in case children want to play outside.

Baby wipes is road trip necessity for diaper-change. Even if your children are long out of nappies, they can be used to wash hands, clean faces, and wipe down surface (restaurant tables, toilet seats, etc.). Besides, make sure you bring other clean-up supplies such as hand sanitizer, tissue or paper towel, zip-lock bags or disposable bags for garbage.

Lastly, but obviously the most important things for every trip is food. It can save you from lots of trouble of your child on trip: fatigue, hunger, irritability and hyperactivity... When your child keep annoying you, the most effective and simple solution is just give them something to eat.

Then your child will absorb in enjoying it and forget what they intend to do. The tips here is prepare healthy and light snacks/ foods like cheese, cookies, nuts, or fruits (such as strawberry, grape)…

Besides, we have some extra safety tips for parents when traveling with kids in car:

  • Children may be exhausted after long road trip, so you need to stop and give yourself and your children a break every two or three hours. During the trip, try to keep them occupied by pointing them out interesting sight along the way.
  • Never leave your children alone in car, even for a minute. Because a child's body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's. Just a few minutes of temperatures inside the car can reach deadly levels and may be very dangerous for a child.
  • Children often become naughty or irritable when on long-distance trip. Try to distract them by simply turning on their favourite music songs or bring some safe, lightweight toys for them. Don’t forget to talk to them frequently and ask about their feelings during the trip.
  • Warning your children to keep their arms, legs and head inside the car when it’s moving as well as parking. Activate childproof door locks to prevent your children from getting out of the car if needed.
  • Always let your children get in and out of the car on the kerb side, away from traffic.

These are only some guides to help you have a safe and happy journey with your kids. Of course they’re never enough for a safe trips because you’ll never know what you may face up to on the trips. All relies on your careness and skills.
